The Last Airbender

M. Night Shyamalan can't catch a break. When he makes a movie based on a cartoon, the fans lynch him for not living up to the spirit of the toon.

The Last Airbender is a fun fantasy film.

I am one of the masses who knows nothing about the animated series. I got this because I enjoyed the music and the special effects looked fun. On both counts, this movie is entertaining. The music drives the action and the effects are great eye-candy.

In a world of nations based on the elements, (water, fire, earth, air) Noah Ringer plays, Aang, the last airbender. He can do some funky moves and manipulate the air to do whatever he wishes. Water benders, fire and earth benders have the same ability with their respective elements.

The Fire nation wants to control the world. They know of the prophecy of an Avatar - someone who can control all the elements. Once they realize it's Aang, the chase is on.

Aang is teamed up with other friends to protect him and gather the other nations to fight off the Fire Nation.

Unfortunately, this is only one movie so we only get as far as the water nations. I'm hoping the other movies will be made as this left it on a sequel-heavy ending. But if the box office is any indicator, I doubt we'll see another Shyamalan/airbender film.
